The Wall is Back…

Check out Radio GDR for great content and links to other sites.

Or rather the blog about the Wall is back. The Wall? Well it never really went away. It’s still there, it just exists in our minds. It’s as powerful a presence as it was 10 years ago when I last blogged on this site.

A lot of water has passed under the Boesebruecke since then. I’ve travelled all over Europe and now I’m a tour guide in London. But the fascination with the  GDR remains. I’ve been back to Leipzig and Berlin and watched them change. I finally made it to Rostock and puzzled at how it didn’t match my prejudices.

And just recently I discovered the excellent Radio GDR podcast series and realised I wasn’t alone with my interest in a country that lasted four decades and then suddenly disappeared.

And I’ve rediscovered writing. As the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall approaches, it seems a good time to look back. It is an interesting time to be alive: political certainties have been upended, old enmities have been revived. And the 20th Century can be viewed with a little more distance now, like my own youth and early adulthood.

So as the next anniversary approaches of Die Mauerfall, I’ll be sharing a few more posts about visits to the former-GDR, with a little inspiration from this new community.

Bis bald.
